I glanced over at the clock on my bedside table, 10.12am. The space beside me was empty, and the house was silent. I sat up, wondering where Joe was, my head spun, and my tummy grumbled.

I groaned as I pulled back the covers, climbed wearily out of bed, and made my way out to the kitchen to find Joe sitting at the kitchen island on my laptop. I rolled my eyes silently; so much for a work-free break.

Draping my arms over Joe's shoulders, I leaned over him, kissing him on the cheek. Joe didn’t turn to return the kiss.

“Morning.” I released Joe and made my way to the brewed coffee on the counter to await what was on his mind. Maybe this was hungover Joe. I poured a cup and turned to lean on the counter to face Joe. “Everything okay?”

“You let him read your book?” He was in my emails.

“Joe, he was helping me.” I set my mug down and made my way back around to him.

“You haven’t let anyone read your book, not even me. But him, you let him.”

“Please don’t do this, Joe.” I reached out for Joe’s hand, a small flinch when I touched it, but he let me.

“Please don’t do what? I'm genuinely curious. You want to have this writing career, but you won’t even let the people who love you read your work. As far as I knew, you hadn’t let anyone read it apart from your agent and whoever she sent it to. Now I find out you’ve let some other guy read it? Some other guy you’ve been having coffee dates with has read your romance novel, and you won’t even let your own boyfriend.”

“They weren’t dates Joe, you’re overreacting.”

“Am I? It says here, and I quote, ‘I overstepped boundaries by asking you out.’ What’s all that about? Maybe he’s the reason you were so hesitant about moving to Charleston.” Joe stood and ran his hands through his hair.

“It also says that I wasn’t interested. What has gotten into you, Joe? What is this all about?”

Joe took a deep breath, trying to collect his thoughts before speaking again. "I don't know, okay? Maybe I'm just feeling insecure about all of this. I love you, but I can't help but feel left out and anxious when you share parts of your life with some other guy." He looked down at the floor, unable to maintain eye contact.

I stepped closer to him, gently lifting his chin so he would meet my gaze. "Joe, you have nothing to worry about. I just wanted some feedback on my book after my discussion with Marcia, and he offered to help. It was purely professional."

"But why him?" Joe asked, his voice still tinged with hurt. "Why didn't you share it with me? Am I not good enough for you to trust with something so important?"

"You are more than good enough, Joe," I replied, my voice soft and reassuring. "I was hesitant to share the book with anyone, not just you.
